Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting After Burglary Call in St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD, Fla. — A call about a possible vehicle burglary early Sunday morning ended in a deadly confrontation between police and a suspect, according to the St. Cloud Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to Starling Chevrolet on U.S. 192 after a security alarm was triggered at the dealership. When officers arrived, they found a man breaking into a vehicle on the lot.

Police say the suspect ran when officers tried to make contact, leading them east of the dealership and onto nearby property. Officers repeatedly ordered the man to stop, but he ignored their commands.

According to investigators, the situation escalated moments later when the suspect pulled out a handgun. Officers fired their weapons, striking the man and leaving him critically injured.

Officers and St. Cloud Fire Rescue paramedics immediately began life-saving efforts at the scene. The man was transported by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The suspect is described as a Black male in his 20s from Orlando. Police say he had an extensive criminal history, including more than a dozen felony charges and numerous additional offenses. His identity has not been released as authorities work to notify his next of kin.

St. Cloud Police Chief Douglas Goerke addressed the incident in a statement.

“The loss of life is always tragic, and my thoughts are with all those affected by this incident,” Goerke said. “We are fully cooperating with the FDLE as they conduct a thorough and independent investigation.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation, with oversight from the State Attorney’s Office. As is standard practice, the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Police say more information will be released once it becomes available and the investigation progresses.
