Small Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing in Mesa Canal Near Falcon Field; No Injuries Reported
Mesa, AZ – A small aircraft made an emergency landing in a canal on Monday morning, prompting a major multi-agency response from Mesa Fire and Medical, Mesa Police, and Gilbert Fire. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m.
Mesa Fire & Medical received the initial report as a plane down, and crews located the aircraft on McLellan Road between Val Vista and Greenfield, near the west side of the canal south of McKellips Road close to Gene Autry Park.
According to the Falcon Field Airport Tower, the aircraft was attempting to land when it struck the back fence of a residence, hitting a block wall containing pool equipment and gas lines before coming to rest in the canal. Despite the impact, no one in the residence was injured, and the structure remained stable.
Both occupants of the aircraft were able to exit the plane on their own before first responders arrived. Mesa Fire & Medical evaluated them on scene, and no one required transport.
Witnesses told iSkyNews.com they saw the aircraft turn sharply before crashing near the orange groves. Officials reported minor fuel leaks, which were quickly addressed by fire crews, including a specialized Foam Truck, due to the risk of ignition.
The call was dispatched as an “ALT 3” Aircraft Crash, the highest-level aircraft emergency classification. ALT 3 alerts indicate a confirmed aircraft down with possible injuries, fire hazards, or fuel dangers, prompting a large-scale response.
According to officials, the pilot was aware of the emergency situation and made the decision to attempt a controlled landing in the canal to avoid nearby homes and traffic.
Mesa Police Crime Scene Investigators responded to assist, and Gilbert Fire provided operational support.
This is a developing story, and iSkyNews.com will continue to update as more details become available.
