Heck of a Way to Start Thanksgiving: Troopers Stop Impaired Driver After Attempted Escape in Phoenix
PHOENIX, AZ – Thanksgiving morning took a dramatic turn for one driver — and for the Trooper who had to stop them — after a suspected impaired motorist tried to flee during a traffic stop near Camelback Road and 99th Avenue.
According to Arizona Highway Patrol, the Trooper first noticed the vehicle creeping along at 45 MPH in a 65, drifting out of its lane, cutting through a gore point, and making an oddly wide turn. All signs pointed to impairment, so the Trooper tried to pull the driver over.
Instead of stopping, the driver kept going for about a mile, eventually veering into a commercial parking lot. That’s when things escalated. The driver suddenly accelerated, appearing to try to get away. Troopers quickly deployed a grappler — a device that safely hooks a vehicle’s rear wheel — bringing the car to a stop before it could speed back into traffic and put others at risk on a busy holiday morning.
After the stop, the Trooper conducted field sobriety tests, which the driver did not perform well on. During what should have been a routine vehicle inventory, Troopers found methamphetamine crushed into the driver’s side floorboard, which led to a full probable cause search.
The driver, a convicted felon, was taken into custody and now faces several charges, including DUI drugs, unlawful flight, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, having an open container in a vehicle, and destruction of evidence. They were booked into the Maricopa County Jail, with blood test results pending.
A holiday reminder from authorities:
🚓 Drugs = JAIL
🚓 DUI = JAIL
