DUI Stop Uncovers Backpack Full of Blunts and Homework

CASA GRANDE, AZ — A routine traffic stop on I-8 turned into a serious lesson in choices for one high school student Friday night.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), just after 9 p.m. on November 14, 2025, Highway Patrol Troopers pulled over a vehicle near Montgomery Road after noticing the rear lights were off and a temporary tag was flapping in the wind.

When Troopers spoke with the 17-year-old driver, they immediately noticed signs of impairment. The teen admitted he had smoked marijuana “a couple hours prior,” and after participating in field sobriety tests—tests he did not pass—he was placed under arrest for DUI pending blood test results.

A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed approximately 14 pre-rolled marijuana blunts, 6 THC vapes, 12 nicotine vapes, a cell phone, and $271 in cash. Four THC vapes, one nicotine vape, and two blunts were found inside the student’s backpack—mixed in with his school assignments.

The teen was arrested and later released to his parents. He now faces three felony charges related to marijuana possession and sales, along with two misdemeanor DUI charges.

Investigators say this case is a reminder that impaired driving can have life-changing consequences.

“DUI + Drugs = JAIL. Talk to your kids about making smart choices. Homework and drugs don’t mix, and neither do drugs and driving."
