Update: Lead-acid batteries were involved in the fire, not lithium-ion batteries.
_____
According to Mesa Fire & Medical, the blaze involved at least 6 Lead-acid batteries and a two 100-pound propane tank, which one of the tanks were leaking, intensifying the flames and creating a volatile environment. During the height of the fire, live power lines came down, forcing all firefighters to evacuate the immediate area under emergency traffic orders for their safety.
Salt River Project (SRP) was notified and dispatched to the scene, with an estimated one-hour ETA to secure the power hazard. A full balance assignment was requested due to the combination of hazardous materials, electrical danger, and potential for explosion.
Crews from Mesa Fire & Medical, Mesa Police, Gilbert Fire & Rescue, Utility 208, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) all responded to assist. Mesa Police closed off surrounding streets as firefighters established defensive positions to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.
Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene by paramedics. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
By 2:31 p.m., firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze, with exception of a few hot spots, and the scene was declared under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A Mesa Fire Investigator has been dispatched to the scene.
Residents were temporarily evacuated but have since been cleared to return once the area was deemed safe.
