Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation at Mesa East 55+ Community

MESA, AZ — A gas leak prompted an emergency response and temporary evacuations this afternoon at the Mesa East 55+ Adult Community, located at 7526 E. Arbor Avenue.

At approximately 2:30 p.m.Mesa Fire and Medical Department units including Engine 217, Engine 213, and Battalion 203 responded to reports of a possible gas leak in the area. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a noticeable odor of gas and reported hearing an audible hissing sound nearby.

Out of precaution, crews evacuated surrounding homes and established a safety perimeter with caution tape to keep residents at a safe distance.

According to witnesses, three vehicles from Southwest Gas Company arrived shortly after to assist in identifying and securing the source of the leak.

iSkyNews.com spoke with a nearby resident who said she could smell gas from inside her home prior to the evacuation order.

As of 3:15 p.m., the scene remains active, and Southwest Gas crews continue working with Mesa Fire to ensure the area is safe before allowing residents to return.
