Mesa Police Department Receives Five Highway Safety Grants to Keep Mesa Roads Safe
MESA, Ariz. (iSkyNews.com) — The Mesa Police Department is getting a big boost in its efforts to keep local roads safe. Officials announced that the department has been awarded five grants from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) for fiscal year 2026 — funding that will help support DUI enforcement, traffic safety education, and community outreach programs throughout the year.
In a statement, Mesa Police expressed gratitude for the partnership and ongoing support from GOHS.
“We’re incredibly thankful to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for helping us continue our mission to make Mesa’s roadways safer,” the department said. “These grants allow us to expand our enforcement and education programs that protect everyone who lives, works, and drives in our city.”
The GOHS plays a crucial role in funding public safety programs across Arizona, helping agencies like Mesa PD, local fire departments, and nonprofits develop initiatives that reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Here’s how Mesa Police plans to use the new funding:
- 🚔 DUI Enforcement Overtime, Materials and Supplies — $139,750
- Supports holiday DUI task forces and targeted patrols
- Provides training and education to combat impaired driving
- 🛑 Selective Traffic Enforcement Overtime, Materials and Supplies — $77,661
- Funds back-to-school traffic safety operations and speed enforcement
- Includes new speed measurement devices for patrol officers
- 👶 Occupant Protection Overtime, Materials and Supplies — $10,870
- Expands child safety seat education and enforcement
- Provides car seats and booster seats for families in need
- 🚶♀️ Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Education and Enforcement — $40,000
- Focuses on education and enforcement to protect pedestrians and cyclists
- 🏍️ Motorcycle Safety Education and Awareness — $20,000
- Supports three civilian motorcycle safety courses during the grant cycle
Mesa Police say these grants will help them continue tackling dangerous driving behaviors while promoting safety through community education.
“Every crash we prevent and every life we save is worth the effort,” the department added. “This funding helps us make that possible.”
