Volusia County, FL – According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a deadly crash occurred at approximately 6:23 p.m. Tuesday evening at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Art Center Avenue in Volusia County.
Troopers say Vehicle 1, a 2023 BMW X3, was stopped facing east on Art Center Avenue, attempting to make a left turn onto northbound U.S. Highway 1. At the same time, Vehicle 2, a 2001 Honda motorcycle, was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 1 approaching the intersection.
As the BMW entered the roadway, it crossed directly into the motorcycle’s path. The motorcycle struck the left side of the SUV, resulting in a violent impact.
The motorcycle rider, a 31-year-old man from New Smyrna Beach, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Troopers confirmed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and next of kin has been notified.
The SUV driver, a 21-year-old man also from New Smyrna Beach, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment.
FHP reports that seatbelts were in use in the SUV. No other occupants were involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit.
