Tempe, Ariz. – School is back in session for Tempe’s K–12 students, and Arizona State University’s fall semester starts next week—meaning tens of thousands of students will soon be walking, biking, and driving around the city. To help keep everyone safe, the Tempe Police Department is launching Operation: Safe Start from August 15 through September 7.

During these weeks, you’ll see more officers out and about near schools, bus stops, and busy intersections—especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. They’ll be watching for speeding, making sure drivers stop for pedestrians, keeping bike lanes clear, and reminding everyone to put their phones down. Officers will also be stepping up DUI patrols in the evenings and on weekends, when ASU events and campus activities are in full swing.

But this isn’t just about writing tickets. Operation: Safe Start is also about connecting with the community. Officers will be talking with students of all ages—sharing tips on staying safe whether you’re walking to school, riding your bike, or heading to class at ASU. They’ll also encourage students to speak up if they see something suspicious.

“With so many new and returning students in Tempe, from kindergarten through college, this is a time when we all need to look out for one another,” said Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy. “By slowing down, paying attention, and making smart choices, we can make the start of the school year safe for everyone.”

The message is simple: slow down, be aware, and watch out for each other. A little extra care goes a long way toward fewer accidents, safer streets, and a stronger community.
