Illegal Immigrant Charged with Attempted Murder After Beer Bottle Attack in Lakeland

Lakeland, FL (July 6, 2025) — A night of drinking between two roommates in Lakeland took a violent turn, resulting in one man being hospitalized and the other arrested on charges of attempted murder.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), deputies responded to a local hospital after a man arrived with a deep neck wound caused by a broken beer bottle. Medical staff informed detectives that the laceration was dangerously close—just one inch—from severing the victim’s carotid artery.

The victim told deputies that he and his roommate had been drinking and joking around at their shared residence on New Tampa Highway in west Lakeland. The situation escalated when 30-year-old Jose Munoz, a Mexican national in the U.S. illegally, allegedly became angry and attacked the victim with a broken bottle.

A neighbor reportedly drove the wounded man to the hospital.

PCSO deputies later located Munoz at the residence, where he admitted during an interview to cutting his roommate. He claimed the victim had thrown a beer bottle at him and was walking toward him at the time, though he acknowledged the man was unarmed.

Munoz resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody without further incident. He was booked into the Polk County Jail and charged with:

  • Attempted Second-Degree Murder (Felony 1)
  • Resisting Arrest Without Violence (Misdemeanor 1)

Due to Munoz's illegal status in the United States, both charges are subject to enhanced penalties. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been notified, and a federal immigration hold has been placed on him.

The investigation remains ongoing.
