SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Officials have identified the victim of yesterday’s fatal bee attack at the Vi at Silverstone Independent Living facility as 65-year-old Nicolas Lopez Soto of Gilbert, Arizona. Soto was working with a small crew to prepare the building exterior for an upcoming beehive removal when the incident occurred.
Around 9:30 a.m., Soto and another worker were on a lift removing stucco from a side column near the roof area when a swarm of bees launched a violent attack. The two workers quickly descended in the lift to escape, but Soto was found unconscious upon reaching the ground. CPR was administered immediately and he was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10:15 a.m.
According to emergency crews, Soto had extensive bee stings both on exposed skin and beneath his clothing. The second man on the lift sustained around two dozen stings and was hospitalized, while a third worker on the ground also received about a dozen stings. Both survivors remain in stable condition and are being held for observation.
The crew had been contracted to prepare the site for a beekeeper scheduled to address the hive concern on July 8. Local police and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office are actively investigating the incident to determine the official cause of death.
This rare and tragic event underscores the unpredictable hazards faced by outdoor workers in the Arizona heat, particularly during seasonal spikes in insect activity.
