PHOENIX, AZ — deadly late-night crash on Interstate 10 ended in tragedy Tuesday after a vehicle caught fire with the driver trapped inside, according to officials.

The incident was first logged at 10:49 p.m. on June 10, when the Arizona Department of Transportation reported a vehicle fire on I-10 Eastbound near South 48th Street at milepost 154. Emergency responders arrived to find a single vehicle fully engulfed in flames near the SR-143 northbound connector.

The motorist remained trapped inside the vehicle and was killed in the fire. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) is leading the investigation into what caused the crash and fire. Officials are reviewing whether speed, mechanical failure, or other factors played a role. They are also working to determine why the driver was unable to escape before the fire spread.

As part of the investigation, all eastbound lanes of I-10 and the on-ramp to northbound SR-143 are shut down. The closures are expected to continue into Wednesday morning, significantly impacting traffic in the area.

AZDPS is urging anyone with dash camera footage or information from the area around 10:45 to 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night to come forward and contact investigators.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
