MESA, Ariz. — A 16-year-old accused of opening fire outside a Mesa reception hall after being denied entry to a private party is now facing eight felony charges, including three counts of attempted murder.

The Mesa Police Department announced Monday that Jesus Daniel Felix Lomeli Figueroa, 16, was indicted by a grand jury on October 19 in connection with the October 10 shooting at Versalles Reception Hall, near Main Street and Lazona Drive.

The shooting involved a private security guard and an off-duty Mesa police officer who was working security at the event. Two people, including Figueroa, were injured.

What Happened That Night?

According to Mesa Police, the incident began around 1 a.m. on October 10 when Figueroa attempted to enter a private event being held inside the reception hall.

Security personnel denied him entry.

Investigators say Figueroa then pulled out a handgun, pointed it at a security guard and opened fire.

Fortunately, the security guard was not struck.

Police say Figueroa then ran toward a nearby vehicle while the security guard and an off-duty Mesa police officer pursued him. Both security personnel discharged their firearms at the fleeing suspect.

Figueroa was struck by gunfire but continued running south across Main Street, where he encountered an on-duty Mesa police officer.

Authorities say Figueroa discarded his handgun before being taken into custody.

During the exchange of gunfire, another man who was sitting inside the vehicle Figueroa had been running toward was also struck.

Both Figueroa and the man were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Neither the off-duty officer nor the private security guard was injured.

Grand Jury Returns Eight-Count Indictment

On October 19, a grand jury indicted Figueroa on eight criminal charges:

Count 1: Attempted Second-Degree Murder

Count 2: Aggravated Assault

Count 3: Attempted First-Degree Murder

Count 4: Aggravated Assault

Count 5: Attempted Second-Degree Murder

Count 6: Aggravated Assault

Count 7: Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm

Count 8: Minor with a Firearm

Although Figueroa is only 16 years old, he is being prosecuted as an adult under Arizona law, which requires juveniles ages 15 through 17 accused of certain serious violent crimes, including first-degree murder, to be prosecuted in adult criminal court.

Figueroa is being held on a $1 million bond.

Investigation Involving Off-Duty Officer

Because an off-duty Mesa police officer discharged a firearm during the incident, the officer-involved shooting investigation was assigned to the Scottsdale Police Department as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.

The multi-agency team investigates shootings and other critical incidents involving law enforcement officers.

Mesa Police continued investigating the criminal allegations that led to the shooting.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against the off-duty officer or private security guard.

What Happens Next?

Figueroa now faces prosecution on the eight felony counts returned by the grand jury. His next court appearance is expected in January.

An indictment is a formal accusation and does not establish guilt. Figueroa is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
