MESA, Ariz. — A motorcycle fire in the drive-thru of a Mesa Chick-fil-A Saturday afternoon left part of the restaurant's exterior badly damaged, destroyed a window and forced the business to close.

The fire happened around 2:51 p.m. on October 24 at the Chick-fil-A located at 1664 S. Stapley Drive, near Stapley Drive and Inverness Avenue.

According to Mesa Fire & Medical, a motorcycle caught fire while in the restaurant's drive-thru lane. The flames spread to the outside of the building, leaving behind extensive damage.

By the time firefighters arrived, the motorcycle fire was already out. However, the damage had already been done.

The flames had reached the restaurant's exterior, destroying a window and leaving large sections of the wall blackened and charred.

Fortunately, the fire did not spread inside the restaurant, and no injuries were reported.

Although the motorcycle fire was already extinguished when crews arrived, firefighters still had concerns about the flames spreading into other parts of the building.

The incident was upgraded to a working first-alarm fire, bringing additional firefighters and equipment to the scene.

A first-alarm response generally means multiple fire engines, ladder trucks and other emergency resources are sent to handle a confirmed fire. The exact number of responding units depends on the department and the type of incident.

Mesa Fire & Medical dispatched several units from different fire stations, along with a command van to help coordinate the response.

Firefighters also climbed onto the roof of the restaurant to make sure the flames hadn't spread into areas that weren't visible from the ground.

This is known as checking for fire extension.

When a fire burns against a building, heat and flames can sometimes make their way into walls, ceilings or roofing materials. Even after the main fire is out, those hidden areas can continue burning and potentially reignite.

That's why firefighters take the extra precaution of checking the roof and other parts of the structure before determining that a fire is fully extinguished.

Fortunately, the flames were contained to the outside of the building.

Extensive Damage Visible Outside Restaurant

While the fire was knocked down quickly, it left behind a considerable amount of damage.

Aerial photographs and aftermath footage captured at the scene show heavy black scorching along the restaurant's exterior wall, a destroyed window and burn damage surrounding the drive-thru area.

The damage is especially noticeable along one side of the building, where flames had traveled upward from the motorcycle and reached the restaurant's exterior.

Despite how badly the outside of the building was burned, the fire never made its way into the restaurant.

Still, the damage was enough to bring business to a halt.

Managers Seen Putting Up Caution Tape

When iSkyNews.com reporters arrived to document the aftermath, the fire was already out, but the extent of the damage was easy to see.

Restaurant managers were observed putting up caution tape around the outside of the building, closing off access to the business.

The normally busy Chick-fil-A was no longer serving customers as staff dealt with the aftermath of the fire.

Google Maps also showed the restaurant as closed following the incident.

At this point, it's unclear how long the restaurant will remain shut down or what repairs will be needed before it can reopen.

A Mesa Fire investigator was also dispatched to the restaurant to look into what caused the motorcycle to catch fire.

Exactly how the fire started remains unknown.

While the motorcycle fire was already extinguished before firefighters arrived, crews continued checking the building to make sure there were no hidden flames or additional fire damage.

Officials have not released an estimated dollar amount for the damage, and no reopening date has been announced.

Despite the fire spreading from the motorcycle to the restaurant, Mesa Fire & Medical confirmed that nobody was injured.

What began as a motorcycle fire in a drive-thru ended with a damaged building, a shattered window and a restaurant temporarily closed.

Fortunately, the flames never reached the inside of the Chick-fil-A, preventing what could have been a much more serious situation.

For now, the restaurant remains closed as the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are investigated.
