Mesa, AZ – A fire broke out this afternoon at the Eastview Apartments, located at 245 N. 56th Street, after a resident’s attempt to barbecue took an unexpected turn, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

The incident occurred around 3:00 PM, when a resident reportedly used lighter fluid, which ignited a large flame and sparked a fire. Witnesses described seeing visible flames and heavy smoke coming from the area.

Multiple 911 calls were placed as concerned neighbors noticed the growing fire. MCSO deputies quickly responded to the scene and assisted with evacuations to ensure the safety of nearby residents.

Fortunately, the fire was extinguished by the resident before firefighters arrived. The Mesa Fire Department conducted a full inspection of the area, checking for hot spots and any potential hazards to prevent flare-ups.

All emergency units cleared the scene and returned to service by approximately 3:40 PM. No injuries were reported, and there was no immediate word on the extent of property damage.

Authorities remind residents to use extreme caution when grilling and to avoid using accelerants like lighter fluid near flammable surfaces.

This incident serves as a timely reminder ahead of summer cookout season: safety first when it comes to open flames.
