The deceased male has been identified as a 17-year-old Mesa resident.

MESA, AZ — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Mesa early Tuesday morning after police say he fled a traffic stop and was later located by officers.
According to information provided directly to iSkyNews.com by the Mesa Police Department, the incident began around 1:42 a.m. when officers pulled over a vehicle near Extension Road and University Drive.
Officers made contact with the people inside the vehicle, but during questioning, the driver reportedly fled the traffic stop.
Police later located the vehicle a second time near Country Club Drive and 6th Street. When officers arrived in the area, they reportedly saw the male driver running away.
Just before 2 a.m., at approximately 1:58 a.m., two Mesa police officers discharged their firearms, striking the man.
Medical personnel responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say a firearm was found near the man following the shooting.
No officers or other members of the community were injured.
What Led to the Shooting?
While police have confirmed that two officers fired their weapons, several questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not provided details about what happened in the moments immediately before the shooting, including what prompted officers to open fire or whether the man threatened officers with the firearm recovered nearby.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
The shooting is now being investigated by the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT), with the Gilbert Police Department serving as the lead investigating agency.
EVCIRT was established on July 1, 2024, as a collaborative effort among eight East Valley law enforcement agencies to investigate critical incidents involving the use of force.
The participating departments include Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Tempe.
Under the agreement, investigators from Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, or Tempe may serve as the primary investigators, while Apache Junction, Paradise Valley, and Queen Creek provide additional investigative assistance.
The arrangement allows another participating agency to investigate a critical incident rather than leaving the department involved in the shooting to conduct the primary investigation of its own officers.
Critical Incident Video to Be Released
The Mesa Police Department says a Critical Incident Briefing Video will be released once the investigation is completed.
These briefings are intended to provide the public with additional information about incidents involving police use of force.
For now, investigators are working to piece together exactly what happened between the initial traffic stop and the deadly encounter approximately 16 minutes later.
iSkyNews.com will continue following this investigation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
