MESA, AZ — What was supposed to be a simple online marketplace purchase turned into a frightening encounter after a man reported being threatened with a firearm while attempting to buy an item from a seller in Mesa.
According to information provided directly to iSkyNews.com by the Mesa Police Department, the buyer had arranged to meet the seller at a private residence to complete the transaction. However, when he arrived, the situation reportedly took a dangerous turn when the seller allegedly threatened him with a gun.
Mesa Police officers responded to the residence and were able to take the suspect into custody without any reported injuries to the suspect or responding officers.
Fortunately, the situation was brought under control without further escalation.
A Reminder to Stay Safe When Buying and Selling Online
According to Mesa Police, incidents like this serve as an important reminder that even routine online transactions can carry unexpected risks.
Whether you're purchasing a used phone, furniture, electronics, or anything else through an online marketplace, taking a few extra precautions can help keep everyone safe.
Whenever possible, arrange to meet in a neutral, well-lit public location, preferably somewhere equipped with security cameras. Some police departments also offer designated safe exchange areas where buyers and sellers can meet.
Avoid meeting strangers at private residences whenever possible, and consider bringing someone you trust along for the transaction.
Most importantly, trust your instincts. If something about the transaction or meeting location doesn't feel right, it's okay to walk away.
