Goodbye, Captain: Patrick Stewart Dies at 86, Leaving a Generation of Star Trek Fans Heartbroken

LOS ANGELES — Before I ever wrote a news story, I was a kid running around the house with a toy phaser, pretending to shoot aliens.

I grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. Patrick Stewart was part of that childhood — the familiar face on the television who made a starship, its crew and an impossible future feel real.

Today, writing about his death brings those memories back.

Stewart, the actor known around the world as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, died Wednesday, October 28, at his Los Angeles home. He was 86. A statement shared on his official social media accounts announced his death Thursday and said he had been living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

According to the family statement reported by Entertainment Weekly, his wife, Sunny, was caring for him, and family and friends surrounded him in his final hours. There was music, prayer, laughter and tears.

Those details bring the loss back to the people closest to him. Behind the captain’s uniform and the decades of applause was a husband, a father and a friend whose family now faces his absence.

For viewers who grew up with him, there is a different, more distant kind of sadness: saying goodbye to someone who was present in our homes without ever knowing us.

Stewart’s career reached far beyond the bridge of the Enterprise. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and built a distinguished stage career. He later introduced himself to another generation as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. He was knighted for services to drama in 2010.

But for me, it will always come back to Picard.

Watching him now, I see things that a child carrying a toy phaser might have missed. The patience. The willingness to listen. The weight of having to make a decision when other people would bear its consequences.

Stewart could make a quiet conversation hold your attention as completely as a battle in space. His portrayal gave Picard authority, but also vulnerability. The captain could be uncertain, hurt or afraid and still find a way to lead.

That is part of what makes this goodbye difficult. We can return to the episodes, hear his voice and watch him take his place on the bridge again. Yet the man who gave us those moments is gone.

Stewart is survived by his wife, musician Sunny Ozell, and his two children, Daniel and Sophia, according to The Associated Press.

I think again of that child running through the house, toy phaser in hand. At the time, it was simply play — another adventure borrowed from a television show I loved.

Years later, the memory is still here. So is the affection for the actor who helped make it possible.

Thank you for those adventures, Sir Patrick.
