ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 48-year-old Orlando man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after crashing into a construction truck on State Road 408 early Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 1:19 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 1.
Troopers said the man was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger in the inside lane when he approached a stationary construction truck equipped with an active light board. The truck, a 2022 Ford F-650, was positioned in the lane for a closure in an active construction zone.
According to FHP, the Charger’s driver failed to move over and struck the rear of the truck.
The truck driver told investigators he saw the man get out of the Charger and begin yelling after the collision. He then went to alert law enforcement officers who were nearby.
When the truck driver returned, he found the man back inside the Charger and unresponsive. FHP said the man was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The construction truck’s driver, a 50-year-old Deltona man, suffered minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the report.
The deceased driver’s name has not been released. FHP indicated that his next of kin had not been notified at the time of the initial report.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
