ORLANDO, Fla. — You're leaving a concert, a theme park, or the airport when an Uber driver asks, "Want to cancel the trip and just pay me cash?" Or maybe a passenger approaches a driver and offers the same deal.
It might sound like a way for everyone to save a few dollars.
To better understand those risks, iSkyNews.com spoke with a five-star Uber driver who has been driving since the early days of ridesharing. The veteran driver, who requested not to be identified, said passengers occasionally ask if they can skip the app altogether.
"It happens more often than people think," the driver said. "Someone will ask if they can pay me directly because they think it'll be cheaper. The problem is, the moment you leave the app, you're also leaving behind many of the protections that make rideshare safer."
The driver said one place where it happens frequently is around Walt Disney World Resort.
"Guests will walk up and ask drivers if they'll take them somewhere for cash," the driver explained. "Some drivers also try to solicit guests directly. It happens more than you'd think."
Beyond the safety concerns, the driver said many people don't realize that Disney has strict rules against unauthorized commercial activities and solicitation on its property. Walt Disney World states in its official property rules that unauthorized solicitation and commercial activity are prohibited, and because the resort is private property, Disney reserves the right to deny entry or remove guests who violate those rules. In some cases, refusing to leave private property after being directed to do so could lead to a trespass warning or arrest.
One of the biggest concerns is insurance.
When a trip is booked through the Uber or Lyft app, the ride is covered by the company's commercial insurance policies, provided the driver is actively on a trip. If a driver accepts cash outside the app, that protection may no longer apply. In many cases, a driver's personal auto insurance policy may also deny coverage if the vehicle is being used commercially without the proper insurance.
That could leave both the driver and passenger financially responsible if a crash occurs.
Safety is another major factor.
The rideshare apps record trip information, including pickup and drop-off locations, GPS tracking, the driver's identity, and vehicle information. Friends and family can also follow trips in real time using built-in safety features.
When a ride takes place off the app, those safeguards disappear.
"If something happens, there's no trip record," the veteran driver explained. "No GPS history through Uber, no emergency tools, and no support from the company because technically, it wasn't an Uber ride."
Drivers also face additional risks.
Operating as an unlicensed "for-hire" transportation service could violate local or state regulations, depending on where the ride takes place. Drivers who repeatedly solicit or accept off-app fares could also face account suspension or permanent removal from rideshare platforms for violating their terms of service.
For passengers, paying cash may seem like an easy way to avoid surge pricing or save a few dollars, but experts say it's important to consider what those savings could cost if something goes wrong.
The five-star driver offered one piece of advice for anyone using a rideshare service:
"If you're using Uber or Lyft, keep the ride in the app. That's what it's there for. It protects both you and the driver."
As rideshare services continue to grow in popularity, safety experts say those built-in protections—including GPS tracking, driver verification, emergency assistance, and insurance coverage—are among the biggest reasons to avoid making private cash arrangements.
The veteran driver also offered one more piece of advice for anyone choosing transportation outside of traditional rideshare services. If you decide to hire a private driver or rent a vehicle for hire, make sure the company or driver carries commercial auto insurance. Commercial coverage is specifically designed for transporting passengers for compensation and can provide important protections that a personal auto insurance policy typically does not. Before getting into any privately hired vehicle, don't be afraid to ask whether the driver is properly licensed and commercially insured.
