- Residents in Central Florida urged to stay weather aware tonight
A line of strong thunderstorms continued to flare up across portions of Central Florida Saturday evening, with weather officials warning that additional storm development remains possible over the next several hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, strong storms were active around 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, particularly north and west of Lake County. Forecasters say outflow from those existing storms could help trigger new thunderstorm cells west of Orlando through the evening hours.
The greatest storm threat remains focused west of the Orlando metro area, including parts of Lake County, where the strongest cells may bring frequent lightning, wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph, and small hail.
While not everyone will see severe weather, rapidly changing conditions could bring sudden downpours, dangerous lightning, and gusty winds to areas that are currently dry.
If new storms develop, drivers could encounter reduced visibility and slick roadways during the evening commute or while heading out for weekend plans.
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on radar updates, secure loose outdoor items, and move indoors immediately if thunder is heard.
Florida’s storm season is ramping up, and even quick-moving evening cells can become dangerous with little warning.
