DAVENPORT, FL — A Sunday morning patrol in Davenport turned into a brief foot chase after deputies say a man acting suspiciously tried to run from law enforcement — only to trip and get caught moments later.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were patrolling Ronald Reagan Parkway around 9:38 a.m. on May 3rd when they noticed a man, later identified as 24-year-old Austin Michael Roman of Poinciana, behaving oddly.

Investigators say Roman appeared nervous and attempted to hide behind a bush after spotting the deputies. When they approached him to investigate, deputies say Roman suddenly took off running.

Despite commands to stop, Roman continued fleeing on foot. Deputies chased after him and were able to catch up when he tripped during the pursuit, bringing the chase to a quick end.

After taking him into custody, deputies conducted a search and say they found approximately four grams of marijuana.

According to the sheriff’s office, Roman later told deputies he ran because he was scheduled to begin Drug Court that week and was worried about getting into trouble again — particularly with his mother.

Roman was transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center, where he was booked on multiple charges, including:
