VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 32-year-old Utah man was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross a busy roadway in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The crash occurred around 5:25 a.m. on October 18, 2026, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 92 (East International Speedway Boulevard) and North Kepler Road near DeLand.
Pedestrian Struck While Crossing Intersection
According to an official FHP crash report, an 18-year-old woman from Fruitland Park was driving a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck eastbound on U.S. 92 in the inside lane.
At the same time, a 44-year-old DeLand man was driving a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas SUV eastbound in the outside lane.
Investigators say the pedestrian, a 32-year-old man from Providence, Utah, attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of U.S. 92 while the pedestrian signal displayed a red "Don't Walk" indication.
The pickup truck was proceeding through the intersection with a green traffic signal when the driver reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian.
Despite the driver's efforts, the right side of the pickup struck the man, throwing him into the outside eastbound lane.
The pedestrian was then struck by the undercarriage of the Volkswagen SUV traveling in the adjacent lane.
Pedestrian Pronounced Dead at Scene
Emergency responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
Neither driver was injured in the crash, and both remained at the scene following the collision.
FHP confirmed that both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
As of the initial report, the pedestrian's next of kin had not been notified. Authorities have not publicly released his identity.
FHP Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol identified Trooper Hudgen as the crash investigator and Corporal Barack as the homicide investigator assigned to the case.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. No charges were announced in the initial FHP report.
