More than a year after a deadly crash near Auburndale claimed the life of a young Lake Alfred man, Polk County Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested the driver accused of leaving the scene without immediately reporting the crash.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Dylan Perry Willey of Auburndale was arrested on May 21, 2026, and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death, a first-degree felony.
The charge stems from a fatal crash that happened on May 12, 2025, at approximately 10:13 p.m., along Old Lake Alfred Road near Keystone Road.
Investigators say 20-year-old Zackeriah Zalin Lamon-Kemp of Lake Alfred was riding a Hover electric bicycle when he was struck from behind by a 2014 Dodge Charger driven by Willey.
During the initial investigation, detectives said Willey told them he believed he had struck a hog in the roadway and continued driving approximately one mile to his home. After seeing the damage to his vehicle, he reportedly notified his mother before returning to the crash scene while calling 911.
However, according to the detective’s complaint affidavit, investigators determined Willey made an intentional decision not to remain at the scene or immediately render aid.
Detectives say the investigation revealed a 12-minute delay in contacting 911, and that Willey traveled roughly two miles before returning only after consulting with his parents.
Sheriff Grady Judd said the case was built through extensive work by the Traffic Homicide Unit before being submitted to the State Attorney’s Office in September 2025.
“Based on the thorough investigation, documentation, and tenacity by my detectives in the Traffic Homicide Unit, the State Attorney’s Office approved an arrest warrant for Dylan Willey due to his negligence by not reporting the crash and Mr. Lamon-Kemp’s injuries in a timely manner,” Sheriff Judd said.
According to investigators, the physical evidence and circumstances indicated that a reasonable person should have known they had struck a human being rather than an animal.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation ultimately led to the issuance of an arrest warrant, resulting in Willey’s arrest this week.
