TAMPA, FL – A 20-year-old Tampa man is lucky to be alive tonight after his vehicle careened off the highway and erupted into flames following a late-night crash on Interstate 275.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at approximately 11:10 PM near milepost 48. Investigators report that the driver of a silver BMW 328i was traveling northbound when he attempted a last-second lane change to merge onto the Sligh Avenue exit.

The high-speed maneuver caused the driver to lose control of the sedan. The vehicle veered off the roadway, crashed through a perimeter fence, and plunged into a roadside ditch.

Almost immediately after coming to a final rest in the ditch, the BMW caught fire. Dramatic photos released by FHP show the vehicle engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to suppress the blaze just feet away from a residential fence line.

Despite the violence of the impact and the subsequent fire, the young driver was able to evacuate the wreckage on his own. Officials confirmed he walked away from the scene with no injuries.

Fire crews arrived quickly to douse the flames, which at one point sent a thick plume of smoke over the interstate. The burnt-out shell of the BMW remained in the ditch as troopers documented the scene. The "Wrong Way" sign and exit ramp lights provided a somber backdrop to the charred remains of the luxury car.

The crash serves as a terrifying reminder of the dangers of abrupt lane changes, especially on busy interstate interchanges.
