SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A powerful storm Thursday left parts of Scottsdale underwater, forcing road closures, stranding drivers, and prompting swift-water rescues as heavy rainfall triggered dangerous flash flooding across the city.

The Scottsdale Police Department issued urgent warnings, advising residents to avoid unbridged crossings and flood-prone areas, including Roosevelt, Osborn, Oak, and Jackrabbit roads. Authorities emphasized that barricades and warning signs are in place for public safety, and urged drivers not to attempt to cross rushing water.

“Scottsdale is seeing extremely hazardous conditions on the roads,” police said. “Please obey barricades, avoid flooded areas, and put safety first.”

  • Vehicles partially submerged in floodwaters as fast-moving runoff overtook intersections.
  • Emergency crews blocking off roads and redirecting traffic under dark, stormy skies.
  • Swift-water rescue teams helping stranded motorists escape from vehicles trapped in the flood.

Officials also reminded residents that sandbags are available at the Scottsdale Water Campus (88th Street & Union Hills). Residents must bring a shovel and fill their own bags.

Police are stressing the importance of preparation and caution:

  • Stay home if possible.
  • Never walk or drive through running water.
  • Keep emergency supplies like flashlights, batteries, and bottled water on hand.
  • Review safety planning tips at ready.gov.
