Temple Terrace Police Officer Charged in Fatal 100 MPH Crash
TAMPA, FL – A Temple Terrace police officer has surrendered to authorities and faces criminal charges following a high-speed collision that claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) announced that Zachary Mason Krug, 25, turned himself in at the Hillsborough County Jail on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Krug is charged with Vehicular Homicide and three counts of Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury.
The fatal crash occurred on East Fowler Avenue as Krug was traveling westbound in a Temple Terrace Police Ford Explorer. According to FHP investigators, Krug was driving at speeds exceeding 100 MPH in a center lane while approaching North Drive.
At the same time, a 36-year-old Tampa woman driving a Nissan Pathfinder was traveling eastbound and initiated a left turn at the intersection. The police vehicle struck the Pathfinder with such force that both vehicles rotated into a ditch on the north side of the roadway.

Casualties and Injuries
Emergency responders transported all occupants to local hospitals. While the injuries were initially classified as non-life-threatening, the situation turned tragic shortly after:
- 6-Year-Old Female: Succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
- 8-Year-Old Female: Remains hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash.
- 1-Year-Old Female: Treated for injuries.
- Driver (36-year-old female): Treated for injuries.
Following the intensive traffic homicide investigation, FHP determined that Krug’s excessive speed was the primary contributor to the crash. In a media statement released Thursday, Temple Terrace City Hall confirmed that Krug—who was hired in January 2024—has been terminated.
"The actions that led to this arrest are not consistent with our policies, our training, or the expectations we place on our officers," the department stated. "We remain deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from this crash and extend our continued condolences to the victim's family."
The department noted that an internal administrative investigation ran parallel to the FHP's criminal probe, concluding that Krug acted in violation of city rules, department policy, and applicable law.
