Florida Moves All Driver License Exams to English Only Starting February 6

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced a major change to the state’s driver licensing process, saying that all driver license exams will now be given only in English, beginning Friday, February 6.

The new policy affects every type of driver license exam, including written knowledge tests, oral exams, and behind-the-wheel skills tests. Interpreter services and translated exam materials will no longer be allowed.

Until now, Florida offered non-commercial driver license knowledge exams in several languages. Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and Commercial Driver License (CDL) exams were already limited to English and Spanish. Under the updated policy, all exams across the board will be conducted exclusively in English.

State officials say FLHSMV has already updated its testing systems statewide to reflect the change. Any printed exams in languages other than English are being removed, and translation assistance will no longer be permitted during testing.

According to the department, the move is aimed at improving roadway safety by ensuring drivers clearly understand traffic laws, road signs, and instructions given by law enforcement or emergency responders.

FLHSMV says the goal is simple: clear communication, safer roads, and consistent standards for everyone driving in Florida.
