Suspect Dead After Standoff at Jamison Apartments; FDLE Investigating
OSCEOLA COUNTY, FL — A tense, all-day standoff in Osceola County ended in tragedy Friday night after a domestic battery suspect fired a weapon and deputies returned fire, ultimately killing the man.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the Jamison Apartments, located near Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway and Partin Settlement Road, at approximately 10:40 a.m. to investigate a domestic battery incident that had occurred overnight. When deputies attempted to contact the 30-year-old suspect, he refused to cooperate, shutting and locking the apartment door.
Deputies monitored the situation as the suspect went live on Facebook, where he made suicidal statements and displayed a handgun, heightening concern for both his safety and the safety of others. Throughout the day, hostage negotiators and family members attempted to persuade him to surrender peacefully.
Late in the afternoon, deputies deployed a chemical agent in an effort to encourage the suspect to exit the apartment. He eventually came out and laid on the ground in a prone position, still holding the handgun and pointing it at his own head.
Just before 9:00 p.m., the suspect discharged the weapon. According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, it remains unknown whether he fired at deputies or shot himself. Deputies then returned fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has been called in to investigate the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in cases involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement.
