Car Slams Into Pole, Blocks Westbound Lanes on Baseline in Mesa
MESA, AZ — Traffic along Baseline Road slowed to a crawl Saturday night after a car slammed into a light pole around 8 p.m. near Baseline and N. Monterey Street, knocking it over and scattering debris across the roadway.
According to 911 callers, the female driver went over the center island before hitting the pole with enough force to bring it down. The fallen pole blocked all but one westbound lane between Gilbert Road and Stapley Drive, creating a significant backup as drivers tried to squeeze through the area.
Mesa Fire and Medical, Mesa Police, and City of Mesa Streets crews responded quickly. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Crews worked to stabilize the scene, clear the debris, and begin the process of getting the roadway back to normal.
Drivers in the area felt the impact of the lane restrictions, with delays stretching until crews could safely manage the scene.
