Mesa Police Force Entry, Use Taser After Finding Woman and Child Restrained

MESA, AZ — New details and images shed light on a violent domestic incident that prompted Mesa Police to force entry into an apartment after officers and a 911 call taker heard a woman screaming for help from inside.

According to the Mesa Police Department, officers were dispatched just after 12:24 a.m. on December 26, 2025, to an apartment complex near the 1200 block of South Rialto Drive for a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis.

⚠️ WARNING: Disturbing audio ⚠️  Audio provided by a nearby neighbor captured the victim’s screams during the incident.

While officers were en route, dispatchers received escalating updates. A woman could be heard screaming for help and yelling for someone to let her go, prompting police to upgrade the response.

When officers arrived, they attempted to make contact but were unable to access the locked apartment. Officers reported hearing loud, ongoing screams coming from inside. Due to immediate concerns for the safety of those inside, police forced entry into the residence.

Photos from the scene show visible damage to the apartment’s front door consistent with forced entry, as well as Mesa Police Forensic Services Crime Scene Unit vehicle parked near the building during the overnight investigation.

Once inside the apartment, officers located an adult male later identified as Daniel Castillo, 31, restraining an adult female victim and their two-year-old child on a bed. Officers issued commands for Castillo to release the victim, allowing the woman and child to move to safety.

Police say Castillo then became aggressive toward officers and refused to comply with commands. Officers deployed a Taser to gain compliance, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Mesa Fire and Medical personnel responded and evaluated Castillo, who reported ingesting non-prescribed Adderall and marijuana. He was transported to a medical facility for further evaluation before being booked into jail.

The victim told officers that Castillo’s behavior escalated suddenly, forcing his way into a bedroom and physically restraining her while she was holding their child. She reported experiencing pain and fear for both her safety and the safety of her child. The victim was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene.

Castillo is facing multiple domestic violence-related charges, including assault and criminal damage.

The investigation remains ongoing.
