Arrest Made in Gilbert Shooting That Left Teen Critically Injured

GILBERT, AZ — Gilbert Police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting that left a 16-year-old boy fighting for his life Saturday night.

Just before 8:00 p.m. on December 13, 2025, officers were called to the 900 block of South Deerfield Lane after reports of a shooting. When police arrived, they found a 16-year-old male suffering from serious gunshot injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

According to investigators, the suspect, 21-year-old Rael Sanchez, was visiting family at the residence at the same time the teenage victim was there visiting his girlfriend. Witnesses told police that Sanchez had allegedly been acting erratically prior to the shooting and was seen in possession of a firearm.

Following the incident, Sanchez allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle. Gilbert Police detectives secured the area, collected evidence, and interviewed multiple witnesses as the search for Sanchez began immediately.

The investigation led detectives to Phoenix, where Sanchez was located just before 10:00 a.m. on December 14 through his involvement in an unrelated incident. He was transported to a hospital in Phoenix, and upon his release, Gilbert Police detectives took him into custody.

Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on one charge of Attempted Second Degree Murder under A.R.S. § 13-1104(A)(2).

The teenage victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police say their thoughts are with the victim and his family during this extremely difficult time.

Charged or submitted offenses are merely allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
