MESA, AZ – Mesa Fire & Medical and Mesa Police responded Sunday night to a serious two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Higley Road and Main Street.
Units from Station 220, Station 205, Medic 220, Station 209, Mesa Fire Connectors, and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene. The call was classified as a “2-in-1 Medical,” which means firefighters were responding to both a vehicle crash and medical emergency simultaneously.
Upon arrival, firefighters performed triage and determined there were two patients involved. One patient was classified as a delayed trauma and was trapped inside their vehicle. Mesa Fire crews were initially unable to open the door and requested a ladder truck equipped for mechanical extrication—a process involving specialized hydraulic tools (“Jaws of Life”) to cut through metal and safely remove trapped occupants.
Ladder 209 responded as the designated extrication unit and successfully rescued the trapped victim and was transported by ambulance to Banner Baywood Hospital for further evaluation.
One of the victims, identified as a female accompanied by a small dog, were treated at the scene and denied transport.
All City Towing was called to remove both vehicles and clean up spilled fluids and debris from the roadway. Vehicle hazards were secured, meaning firefighters disabled the vehicles’ electrical systems and eliminated any fire or fluid leak risks before clearing the scene.
The scene was cleared by 9:30 p.m., and all Mesa Fire & Medical and Mesa Police units returned to service shortly after.
A big thank you goes out to all our first responders for their quick actions in keeping our community safe.
