TONOPAH, AZ — Just before 1:00 a.m., Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Troopers responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 10 near Tonopah.
According to investigators, a red Nissan Frontier traveling eastbound collided with a stationary semi-truck parked on the right emergency shoulder. The impact caused extensive front-end damage to the Nissan, which was nearly destroyed in the crash.
The driver of the Frontier sustained non-life-threatening injuries, including lacerations to the arm and head, and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. During the investigation, Troopers observed signs of impairment and reportedly discovered illegal substances inside the vehicle.
The driver was later charged with DUI and multiple felony drug offenses. Authorities noted that, given the severity of the wreck, the driver was extremely fortunate to survive.
