📱 “I Was Just Texting…” — Driver Launches Into Canal on I-10 On-Ramp
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (October 4, 2025) — A driver learned a costly lesson in distraction Saturday night after crashing off the I-10 eastbound on-ramp at Dysart Road and launching into a canal — all because of a text.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), troopers arrived to find the driver’s vehicle nose-down in a canal, tangled in fencing and barely hanging on the embankment. Incredibly, the driver walked away without injuries and no other vehicles were struck.
The cause? Texting behind the wheel.
The driver admitted to using his phone while entering the on-ramp, drifting off the road and slamming through the fence before landing in the canal. It took two tow trucks to recover the vehicle.
Troopers issued multiple citations, including:
- Using a Portable Wireless Communication Device While Driving
- Unsafe Lane Usage
- Failure to Control Speed to Avoid a Collision
“We told you not to text and drive,” AZDPS said in a statement. “This driver was lucky. Next time, someone might not be.”
The twisted metal and crushed fencing are now a harsh visual reminder of just how fast a distraction can turn into disaster.
AZDPS is urging drivers to stay focused and use hands-free technology when behind the wheel. The message is clear: It can wait.
