SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Scottsdale Police Department detectives are investigating a tragic homicide that occurred over Labor Day weekend, leaving a longtime resident dead and authorities urgently searching for a suspect.
The incident unfolded on September 1, 2025, after Scottsdale Police received a welfare check request around 1:30 p.m.when 67-year-old Frank Quaranta failed to report to work. Officers responded to Quaranta’s home near 68th Street and McDowell Road, but after repeated attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, they were forced to make entry into the residence.
Inside, they made a heartbreaking discovery — Quaranta was found deceased. Detectives and crime scene specialists spent several hours at the scene gathering evidence and processing the home.
Police say the attack was targeted and have identified the suspect as Matthew Dieringer, a 35-year-old white male described as 6’03”, 185 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Dieringer reportedly has a history of experiencing homelessness and is known to be “manipulative and charismatic,” often befriending people to gain a place to stay. Police warn the public to use extreme caution if they see him.
“If you encounter Mr. Dieringer, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately,” Scottsdale Police said in a statement.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on Dieringer’s whereabouts to call (480) 312-TIPS or provide an anonymous tip through Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377. Tips that lead to an arrest or indictment may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Police have released a photo of Dieringer from June 2025 and continue to follow leads as the homicide investigation remains active.
