MESA, AZ — A Subway restaurant in Mesa was temporarily evacuated this afternoon following a 911 call reporting a strong gas odor, which prompted a significant emergency response from local authorities.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. today, Mesa Fire & Medical Department received the initial call regarding a potential natural gas leak at the Subway located at 3550 E. Southern Ave. The call was quickly escalated to a "2 in 1 Natural Gas Leak," which brought a robust response including multiple fire engines, a battalion chief, and Mesa Police Department officers.

Upon arrival, first responders observed nothing unusual from the exterior of the building. Emergency crews then proceeded to investigate the source of the smell by going business to business in the area. During the investigation, both SRP and the City of Mesa confirmed that the location does not have a natural gas source, which cast doubt on the initial report.

After a thorough search, authorities determined that no gas leak or any other hazard was present. The scene was declared safe, and all employees and customers were given the all-clear to return to the businesses.

The incident was ultimately deemed a false alarm, with no injuries or danger posed to the public.
