Phoenix, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — A dangerous DUI crash on Wednesday evening could have ended much worse after a suspected drunk driver traveled the wrong way on a major highway and caused a head-on collision near Sky Harbor Boulevard.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), around 8:00 PM, a dark-colored Toyota Tacoma was reported driving southbound in the northbound lanes of AZ-143. Before troopers could intervene, the wrong-way vehicle slammed head-on into a white Jeep Wrangler, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

After the crash, the driver of the Tacoma attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly detained by Highway Patrol troopers. Officers noted several signs of alcohol impairment, including slurred speech, unsteady balance, and a strong odor of alcohol. The driver refused to answer questions or submit to chemical testing.

Troopers obtained a search warrant to draw his blood for testing. While being treated at the hospital, the driver admitted to causing the crash and expressed remorse for his actions.

The victim in the Jeep Wrangler suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Their vehicle was completely totaled.

The driver of the Tacoma now faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Aggravated DUI – Wrong Way
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Criminal Damage
  • Endangerment
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Serious Injury

Authorities are once again urging drivers to make responsible choices:

DUI = Jail
Felonies = Jail
Find a ride. Save a life. The one you save could be your own.
