Mesa, AZ — A two-vehicle collision Saturday evening left one person hospitalized and sent a car crashing through the wall of an elderly woman’s backyard in east Mesa.

The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. near 3345 E. University Drive, just west of Val Vista Drive. According to Mesa Fire & Medical, one of the vehicles veered off the road and slammed into the block wall bordering the Las Alegres 55+ Community, startling the homeowner but causing her no physical injuries.

The second vehicle came to rest facing the wrong way in the center lane of University Drive. Crews from Mesa Fire evaluated everyone at the scene, and one person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic Impact
Eastbound University Drive was shut down before Val Vista, while westbound lanes were restricted to a single lane. Traffic delays lasted nearly an hour as crews worked to clear the scene and repair damage.

Scene Response
Mesa Police officers, including a Crime Scene Unit, responded to assist with the investigation. All City Towing arrived with a flatbed truck to remove both damaged vehicles from the roadway.

By approximately 9:31 p.m., all units were back in service and traffic had fully reopened.
