Officer-Involved Shooting in Mesa

Mesa, AZ — August 10, 2025 — Mesa police officers were involved in a shooting Sunday afternoon in the eastbound travel lanes of U.S. 60, just west of Alma School Road. According to the Mesa Police Department, the incident occurred after a pursuit stemming from a violent incident at an apartment complex earlier in the day.
Police say that just after 4:00 p.m., officers responded to a call at an apartment complex near the 600 block of S. Country Club Drive. The caller reported a man making threats with a knife, kicking in an apartment door, grabbing a kitchen knife, and attempting to force a woman into a vehicle.
As officers arrived, the suspect — later identified as a 37-year-old man — fled the scene in a blue truck. Officers pursued the vehicle out of the complex and through Mesa streets, eventually reaching the U.S. 60 westbound on-ramp from Alma School Road. Police attempted a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver to stop the truck, bringing it to a halt.
The suspect exited the truck and ran southbound across the westbound lanes of the freeway before jumping the median and continuing across the eastbound lanes. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the man reach for his waistband, and it was at that point that an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The 37-year-old man was struck at least once by gunfire. Officers provided medical aid at the scene before he was transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive. One officer fired his duty weaponduring the incident. No officers or other individuals were injured.
According to Det. Dreyer with the Mesa Police Department, “We want to assure the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.”
The investigation is being led by the Gilbert Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Questions related to the shooting should be directed to Gilbert PD, while questions about the initial call remain with the Mesa Police Department.
