MESA, AZ – A 13-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man are both facing serious charges after an armed robbery turned into a shootout in a Mesa neighborhood on Tuesday night, August 19, 2025.

Just before 8:00 p.m., Mesa police officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area of Lazona Drive and McKellips Road. One caller reported that their home had been struck by bullets, while another told dispatchers that their 13-year-old son had been shot.

Officers quickly located the teen on the 2000 block of Hunt Circle, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. Mesa Fire & Medical crews treated him at the scene before he was taken for further care.

Police say the incident began when 20-year-old Brandon Major arranged to meet the juvenile after the teen posted a ring for sale on the app OfferUp. During the exchange, investigators say the 13-year-old pulled a handgun and robbed Major before running away.

Major then drew his own firearm and opened fire, striking the boy in the leg. The teen allegedly returned fire but did not hit Major. Several occupied homes were damaged during the crossfire, though no additional injuries were reported.

Thanks to surveillance from the Mesa Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, officers identified a suspicious vehicle fleeing the area and stopped it a short time later. Major was taken into custody without further incident.

Major has since been booked into jail on charges of Aggravated Assault, Endangerment, and Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm.

The 13-year-old was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, and Minor in Possession of a Firearm.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
