Homeless Man Shot in Mesa; Suspect in Custody

MESA, AZ – A shooting in Mesa Thursday evening has left one man hospitalized in life-threatening condition. According to the Mesa Police Department, officers responded around 6:00 p.m. to the parking lot of Mountainside Fitness, located near Greenfield Road and Brown Road, in front of Salsa Cabana Mexican Restaurant.
Police say the victim, identified by his father as Ryan, suffered at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital as a Level 1 Trauma patient — the highest classification of medical emergency, which indicates the need for immediate, specialized treatment by a full trauma team due to the severity of the injury. In the case of a gunshot wound, Level 1 Trauma typically means the patient is at high risk of death without rapid surgical intervention.
Ryan’s father told iSkyNews.com reporters that his son had been homeless and living on the streets prior to the shooting.
The suspect is currently in custody, and investigators believe this was an isolated incident. Authorities say there is no danger to the public.
