Gusty Thunderstorm Moves Through East Valley Overnight, Prompting Weather Alert
Mesa, AZ - A strong thunderstorm swept through parts of the East Valley early Thursday morning, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix.
According to meteorologists, Doppler radar began tracking the storm around 1:24 AM MST as it moved over the San Tan Village Mall area, near Gilbert. The system was traveling northeast at approximately 10 miles per hour.
Wind gusts between 40 to 45 miles per hour were detected, capable of knocking down tree limbs and blowing around unsecured outdoor items. The NWS warned residents to take precautions, especially those with loose patio furniture, umbrellas, or light structures outdoors.

Highway corridors potentially affected by hazardous conditions:
- U.S. Highway 60 between mile markers 185 and 192
- Arizona Route 87 between mile markers 156–159 and 162–168
- Loop 202 between mile markers 29 and 48
No immediate damage or injuries were reported as of early Thursday morning, but residents across the East Valley were advised to remain alert in case additional cells develop overnight.
This weather system marks another reminder of the unpredictable nature of Arizona's monsoon season, where isolated thunderstorms can form quickly and create dangerous travel conditions or power disruptions.
