Elder Fraud Is On the Rise — But You’re Not Alone
Mesa, AZ — Scammers are getting smarter, and unfortunately, they're increasingly targeting seniors — often with heartbreaking results. But the FBI wants you to know: help is out there, and you are not alone.
Criminals are using the internet to pull off all kinds of schemes — fake tech support calls, investment offers, sweepstakes, and even romance scams — aimed directly at older adults, usually those 60 and up. It’s called Elder Fraud, and it’s becoming more common every year.
The FBI, working with the Department of Justice’s Elder Fraud Initiative, is urging anyone who has been affected — or knows someone who has — to speak up and report it.
“Millions of Americans have fallen victim to scams like this,” said an FBI representative. “Reporting it is not only brave — it helps stop these criminals from targeting others.”
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is the easiest way to report elder fraud online. Every report helps investigators spot trends, connect the dots, and take down the people behind these scams.
🧓 What to Do if You’ve Been Targeted:
🔹 Contact Your Bank ASAP
If you sent money or shared account info, call your bank and ask for a wire recall and a Hold Harmless Letter. Quick action can sometimes stop the money from going through.

Reach out to the three major credit bureaus to freeze or monitor your credit:
- Equifax: 800-685-1111
- Experian: 888-397-3742

🔹 Report It
Visit www.ic3.gov to file a complaint directly with the FBI.
