Hay Trailer Catches Fire on I-10 Near Eloy, Slows Traffic for Hours
Eloy, AZ – Drivers along Interstate 10 near Eloy had an unexpected delay Thursday morning after a semi hauling hay bales caught fire near milepost 215 eastbound.
According to the Eloy Fire District, crews arrived to find flames spreading through the loaded trailer, forcing firefighters to shut down two lanes of traffic for safety. The fire created heavy smoke and slowed traffic for miles as crews worked to get things under control.
Engine 521 was able to knock down the main flames quickly, but hay fires are tricky — even when the outside is out, the inside can smolder for hours.
To fully extinguish the fire, firefighters waited for an ADOT front loader to arrive and help pull the hay bales apart, allowing crews to douse the hot spots and prevent reignition.
The fire has since been cleared and all lanes are now back open. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
