Mesa Father Arrested for Murder After Death of 4-Week-Old Baby Girl

Mesa, AZ – A Mesa father is facing First-Degree Murder and Child Abuse charges after the tragic death of his newborn daughter.

22-year-old Jonathan Enriquez was arrested after police say he admitted to striking his 4-week-old baby, who later died in the hospital.

It all began on the morning of July 11, when Mesa Police were called to an apartment complex near 1821 E. Covina Street for reports of a baby who wasn’t breathing. Enriquez told officers the infant had choked while being bottle-fed.

When officers arrived, they were handed the unresponsive baby girl. First responders immediately began CPR and rushed her to the hospital, where she was placed in critical condition.

As doctors worked to save her life, medical staff discovered multiple injuries in various stages of healing, raising serious concerns. Investigators quickly focused in on how the baby could have been hurt.

Police say the child was alone with Enriquez at the time she stopped breathing. Both parents were interviewed, and during his conversation with detectives, Enriquez admitted to hitting the child.

Sadly, the baby passed away on July 26, two weeks after being hospitalized.

Enriquez was arrested shortly after and has been booked into jail on charges of First-Degree Murder and Child Abuse. He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
