Mesa, Arizona — A massive dust storm barreled through Mesa late Monday afternoon, plunging the city into near-zero visibility and unleashing wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. The National Weather Service issued a Dust Storm Warning for Maricopa and Pinal Counties at 3:50 PM MST, citing life-threatening travel conditions and widespread disruption.

Footage captured by iSkyNews shows the storm’s rapid advance across Mesa, blanketing roads, businesses, and neighborhoods in thick dust. Local residents scrambled for cover as visibility dropped below a quarter mile, and emergency alerts urged drivers to pull over and turn off lights to avoid collisions.

The extent of damage was severe: multiple vehicle collisions were reported across key intersections, power lines were downed throughout residential zones, trees were uprooted, and traffic lights across Mesa went dark—creating dangerous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians. Businesses sustained structural damage, with signage ripped away and debris scattered across rooftops and parking lots.

Images from the scene show a towering wall of dust engulfing commercial lots, palm trees bending under the force of the wind, and suburban neighborhoods bracing for impact beneath a dark, churning sky. In one frame, a calm parking lot is transformed into a battleground of swirling sand and chaos—underscoring the storm’s sudden and overwhelming force.

The storm’s path included key highways such as Interstate 10, Interstate 8, and Route 87, with traffic grinding to a halt between mile markers 174 and 204. Mesa residents described the storm as “sudden and suffocating,” with dust infiltrating homes, storefronts, and ventilation systems.

“This was one of the fastest-moving dust walls we’ve seen this season,” said a trained weather spotter near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. “It hit hard and left a trail of chaos in under an hour.”

The warning expired at 4:45 PM MST, but cleanup efforts are expected to continue into the night. Residents are advised to stay indoors, monitor air quality, and report any downed power lines or structural damage to local authorities.
