British Tourist Arrested for Attempted Murder in Davenport Pool Incident
Davenport, FL (August 3, 2025) — A family vacation at a Central Florida resort turned violent Sunday evening when a 62-year-old man from the United Kingdom was arrested for allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law during an argument.
Polk County deputies responded to a disturbance call at the Solterra Resort on Pine Tree Trail in Davenport around 5:19 p.m., where witnesses reported an altercation in a backyard swimming pool.
The suspect, identified as Mark Raymond Gibbon of Beaconsfield, England, is accused of pushing and forcibly holding the head of his 33-year-old daughter-in-law under water multiple times, preventing her from breathing. The incident reportedly began after an argument erupted about his grandchildren.
In a heroic attempt to save her mother, the victim’s 9-year-old daughter jumped into the pool to intervene. The suspect reportedly stopped only after two neighboring vacationers from Ohio shouted that they had called the Sheriff's Office.
“This is a reminder that we welcome tourists from all over the world, but we expect them to behave,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “Because Mr. Gibbon couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.”
Gibbon was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on the following charges:
- Attempted 2nd-Degree Murder (F2)
- Battery (M1, 2 counts)
No bond information has been released at this time.
