PHOENIX, Ariz. — Governor Katie Hobbs has declared a State of Emergency in La Paz County following the destruction of the Oxbow Bridge, which collapsed into the Colorado River after being burned by a wildfire.

The declaration unlocks state resources and funding to aid in the disaster response, with a priority on removing debris from the river to protect the environment and downstream infrastructure.

“The collapse of the Oxbow Bridge is a devastating blow to the La Paz County community,” Hobbs said. “Protecting the health and safety of Arizonans is my top priority, and the State of Arizona stands ready to support those impacted by this horrible event.”

Under the emergency order, the Governor’s Emergency Fund is now available to the Director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management to support response and recovery operations. The Governor also ordered the use of the State of Arizona Emergency Response and Recovery Plan to coordinate assets and resources.

The State Emergency Operation Center has been activated at Level 2 to work with emergency response partners and assess additional needs. The Department of Emergency and Military Affairs is collaborating with county, state, federal, and Tribal agencies to identify service gaps affecting community needs, essential businesses, and government operations.

Officials say the focus now is on swift cleanup efforts, ensuring public safety, and restoring critical infrastructure as the community recovers from the sudden loss of the bridge.
