Even “small” tsunami waves carry powerful, fast-moving water that can be deadly.
🌊 Tsunami Impact and Urgency
Authorities are urging immediate evacuation of low-lying coastal areas. The first wave is expected to reach Hawaii by 7:17 PM HST tonight (Tuesday), but officials stress that:
- A tsunami consists of multiple waves — each wave can last 5–15 minutes or more
- The first wave may not be the largest
- Flooding may recur for several hours
- All shores are at risk, regardless of orientation to the epicenter
- Tsunami waves can wrap around islands, creating danger on all sides
Debris carried by the surge, strong and erratic currents, and high surf may amplify destruction, especially during simultaneous high tide conditions.
